Visual Inspection and Medical Lasers: The Quanta System Case Study

When it comes to quality control, color isn’t just an aesthetic detail; it’s a technical parameter. In areas like medical laser technology, color consistency between batches is a mandatory standard for approval.

It was the challenge faced by Quanta System Spa, an Italian company that specializes in the production of laser systems for medical, industrial and scientific applications.

Problem Subjective visual inspections and inconsistencies between batches
SAMA Tools’ Solution Colorimeter + Glossmeter + Technical Training
Results More objective, repeatable, and traceable quality control
Instruments used SA230 Colorimeter • SA0835 Glossmeter

The Problem: Too much Reliance on Visual Inspection

Inconsistant Appearance of Painted Components
When changing suppliers or providing replacement parts years later, they found themselves with components that – although supposedly the same color – appeared visibly different.
Why?   Two reasons that are often overlooked:

  1. Slight color variations that are perceptible to the human eye.
  2. Differences in surface gloss, which alter how color is perceived, even when using the same RAL code.

As a result: they had no objective way to measure and verify color and gloss.  They depended on visual judgement or supplier reliability, which posed a serious risk to the visual quality of  the final product.

The Solution:  Reliable Tools for Objective Measurement

During an on-site training session at Quanta System Spa, we introduced two key instruments for objective visual inspection:

SA230 Colorimeter

A portable, non-destructive tool for analyzing color differences between two or more samples using Lab and Lch coordinates.

It’s ideal for quality control during both incoming and outgoing inspections and works with a wide range of materials – including  plastic, metal, prints and painted surfaces.  This tool is compact and precise and can be used directly on-site without the need for controlled environments.

This model displays the exact measurement area on a digital screen, which ensures accurate placement even on complex or detailed surfaces. Watch the video below and download the technical data sheet directly from our website.

SA0835 Glossmeter

This non-destructive measuring instrument determines the degree of gloss on painted or polished surfaces.

The ability to measure three different detection angles permits readings to be adapted to the surface’s gloss level, ensuring reliable and representative results.  This feature makes it especially effective on critical or unique surface finishes.

The glossmeter is essential in many industries- including automotive, industrial coatings, furniture manufacturing and any field where visual appearance and surface gloss are critical quality parameters that require constant monitoring.

Both instruments were introduced through practical training sessions to ensure correct and effective use by the production staff.

Final Results: Facts Instead of Opinions

By introducing these instruments and training:

  • Quality control became more objective and traceable.
  • Color consistency across batches was standardized.
  • The team gained greater operational confidence.
  • The risk of non-conformaties and complaints was significantly reduced.
