Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple datalogger thermometer – HD2178.2

Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple datalogger thermometer – HD2178.2

The Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple datalogger thermometer is a dual-input portable instrument for temperature measurement with RTD probes and thermocouples, featuring internal data logging capability. It is the most complete version in the HD2178 family, designed for applications where measurements must be acquired, stored and transferred to a PC for analysis, documentation or archiving.

The configuration includes one input for 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 probes and 2-wire Pt1000 probes with SICRAM module, plus one input for K, J, T, N and E thermocouples with standard polarized miniature connector. This allows the instrument to handle different sensor technologies within the same device, selecting the most suitable solution according to the application.

With Pt100/Pt1000 probes, the measuring range is -200…+650 °C. With thermocouples, the range depends on the connected type: K -200…+1370 °C, J -100…+750 °C, T -200…+400 °C, N -200…+1300 °C, E -200…+750 °C. The stated accuratezza for thermocouple measurements refers to the instrument only and does not include thermocouple error or cold junction reference sensor error.

The datalogger function allows storage of up to 80,000 samples, organized into 2000 pages with 40 samples each. Logging interval can be configured to 1, 5, 10, 15 or 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes and 1 hour. Stored data remain protected independently of battery charge status.

Data transfer can be performed through RS232C or USB 2.0. The USB port on the datalogger version operates as HID device, therefore connection to a PC with CP23 cable does not require dedicated USB drivers. Through RS232C it is also possible to connect a compatible portable printer.

Pt100/Pt1000 probes with SICRAM module are automatically recognized by the instrument and retain calibration data internally. Thermocouples instead use the standard miniature connector, allowing connection of K, J, T, N and E probes according to the required measurement.

Compared to single or dual-input Pt100 thermometers, this model offers greater flexibility by combining one RTD input and one thermocouple input. Compared to the HD2178.1 version, this model adds internal memory, USB port and the ability to download stored data afterwards.

Functions such as Max, Min and Avg, REL, HOLD and selectable auto power-off support everyday use both in field and laboratory applications. The IP66 protection rating makes the instrument suitable for industrial inspections, thermal testing, field measurements and monitoring campaigns.

RTD probes comply with IEC 60751, while thermocouples comply with IEC 60584-1:2013. Selection between Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple technology should therefore consider measuring range, required accuratezza, stability, response time and geometry of the measuring point.

Applications

  • Temperature data logging with Pt100, Pt1000 and thermocouple probes
  • Thermal monitoring in laboratory, production, maintenance and testing environments
  • High-temperature measurements with K or N thermocouples
  • Inspections with RTD probes where stability and good accuratezza are required
  • Data acquisition with configurable logging interval
  • Data transfer to PC through RS232C or USB 2.0
  • Connection to portable printer through serial interface
  • Measurement campaigns requiring both RTD and thermocouple sensors

FAQ – Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple datalogger thermometer

When should the Pt100/Pt1000 and thermocouple datalogger thermometer be selected?
It is designed for applications where temperature must be measured and recorded using different sensor technologies, combining Pt100/Pt1000 probes and thermocouples within the same instrument.

What is the difference compared to the HD2178.1 version?
HD2178.1 transfers data in real time through RS232C but does not store data internally. HD2178.2 adds the datalogger function, USB port and storage capacity up to 80,000 samples.

What is the difference compared to dual-input Pt100 thermometers?
Dual-input Pt100 thermometers operate with two RTD probes. This model instead combines one RTD input and one thermocouple input, making it more suitable where different measurement technologies are required.

How many data samples can it store?
It can store up to 80,000 samples, organized into 2000 pages with 40 samples each.

Which logging intervals are available?
Selectable intervals include 1, 5, 10, 15 and 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Does the USB connection require drivers?
No. The USB port on the datalogger model operates as HID device. When connected with CP23 cable, no dedicated USB driver installation is required.

Which thermocouples can be connected?
It supports K, J, T, N and E thermocouples with standard polarized miniature connector.

When is a thermocouple preferable over Pt100?
A thermocouple is preferable when higher temperature ranges, faster response times, lightweight probes or measurements in difficult-to-access locations are required.

Are probes supplied with the instrument?
No. Pt100/Pt1000 probes, thermocouples and optional connection cables must be ordered separately according to the real application.

Can measurements be printed directly?
Yes. Through RS232C it is possible to connect a compatible portable printer using the dedicated cable.
