Scribe marks machine for corrosion testing – SASMM539

The scribe marks machine is designed to prepare coated panels for corrosion testing when the applicable specification or test plan requires a scribe mark on the sample before exposure.

In tests on paints, organic coatings, electroplated treatments and other surface finishes, the quality of the scribe mark can affect test comparability. An irregular trace, with damaged edges or made differently from one test panel to another, makes it more difficult to assess coating behaviour consistently during the test.

The SASMM539 uses an electrically driven rotating cutter to produce scribe marks with a clean edge. The movement of the head along the travel is manually guided by the operator, while the system helps maintain a more consistent scribe geometry than a process carried out entirely by hand using conventional tools.

Positioning references and panel-clamping systems help keep the sample stable during scribing. This is particularly useful when several test panels with parallel, transverse or cross-cut lines need to be prepared while maintaining consistent conditions between samples.

The SASMM539 scribe marks machine is mainly used to prepare painted panels, test panels with electroplated treatments, coated laminates and flat components for corrosion testing. It is a natural complement to a salt spray fog cabinet when the applicable method requires the coating to be scribed before exposure.

Scribing is not required for every corrosion test: it must only be carried out when specified by the coating specification, product standard or test plan. In these cases, the SASMM539 helps standardise test panel preparation and reduce differences introduced by manual work.

Applications

  • Preparation of coated test panels for salt spray corrosion testing
  • Scribing of painted panels intended for tests on liquid paints, powder coatings, primers and protective coatings
  • Preparation of samples with zinc coatings, nickel plating, chrome plating, electroplated treatments and other surface finishes
  • Checks on organic coatings applied to metal substrates
  • Quality control and development of surface treatments in laboratories and technical departments
  • Preparation of test panels for comparing painting cycles, materials or suppliers
  • Support for testing performed with SASSC series salt spray fog cabinets

FAQ – Scribe marks machine

What is a scribe marks machine used for?
It is used to prepare coated panels with controlled scribe marks when required by the test plan before a corrosion test. The scribe mark makes it possible to assess coating behaviour along the traced area.

Is the SASMM539 fully automatic?
The rotating cutter is electrically driven, while the movement of the head along the travel is manually guided by the operator. This solution makes it possible to directly control the scribing movement according to the test panel and required trace, achieving a more controlled scribe mark with a rotating tool.

Why use a rotating cutter for scribing?
The rotating cutter helps obtain a cleaner and more regular scribe edge, reducing the risk of lateral coating damage that could make test results less comparable.

What is the width of the scribe mark?
The standard cutter produces a 2 mm wide scribe mark. The configuration is designed to prepare test panels for corrosion tests on coatings and surface treatments.

Is scribing always required before a salt spray test?
No. Scribing must only be carried out when specified by the coating specification, product standard or adopted test plan.

Which surfaces can it be used on?
The SASMM539 is suitable for flat panels and test samples with paints, electroplated treatments, zinc coatings, nickel plating, chrome plating and other coatings applied to a substrate compatible with the test.

Can it be used together with a salt spray fog cabinet?
Yes. When the method requires scribed test panels, the machine prepares the sample before exposure in the salt spray fog cabinet, for example in SASSC series models.
