Automatic scratch testers – SAAST520

Automatic scratch testers are designed to evaluate the behaviour of paints and coatings when subjected to controlled scratching. During the test, the coated sample is moved beneath a stylus that applies a defined or progressively variable load, depending on the model and method applied.

The scratch resistance test makes it possible to verify how effectively a coating withstands damage caused by a localised mechanical action. This test is particularly useful on dried paints, enamels and coatings where the effect of the applied force can be evaluated by examining whether it causes a visible mark or scratch, or penetrates through the coating film.

A scratch test on coatings makes it possible to compare samples produced with different formulations, drying cycles or application conditions. In quality control, the test can be used to verify compliance with a predefined requirement; while in the laboratory, it helps determine how scratch resistance changes as the coating or process varies.

Two models are available: SAAST520/1, designed for fixed-load tests, and SAAST520/2, designed for variable-load tests. The appropriate configuration depends on the applicable test method and on the type of coating evaluation that is required.

The SAAST520/1 carries out the test using a defined load in accordance with ISO 1518-1. This configuration is suitable when the sample needs to be subjected to a predetermined scratching condition the coating’s response to the applied load evaluated.  It is therefore well suited to comparative testing and pass/fail inspections based on a specified load requirement.

On both models, the worktable can be repositioned to facilitate testing in different areas of the same panel. The audible and visual signaling system also assists in detecting coating penetration, making it easier to identify damage during the test.

The SAAST520/2 performs variable-load testing in accordance with ISO 1518-2. In this case, the coating is subjected to a progressively increasing load to determine the point at which damage to the film begins to appear. This method is particularly useful for comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings or evaluating changes in surface behaviour as the applied load increases.

The difference between the two models is therefore based on the test criterion: the SAAST520/1 evaluates the coating response under a fixed load, whereas the SAAST520/2 assesses film behaviour while a progressively increasing load is applied. Both instruments perform a controlled scratch test, but each configuration is intended to meet different inspection requirements.

Automatic scratch testers are used for inspecting industrial paints, enamels, protective coatings and finishes applied to panels or samples that are compatible with the test method. Scratch resistance is an important parameter when the coating may be exposed to localised contact, rubbing or stresses that could affect its appearance or compromise the continuity of the surface.

The availability of both fixed-load and variable-load testing makes the SAAST520 range suitable for inspections under defined conditions as well as for more detailed comparisons between coatings, helping identify which configuration is most consistent with the intended application.

FAQ – Automatic scratch testers

What is an automatic scratch tester used for?
It is used to evaluate the resistance of a paint or coating to a controlled scratch, observing the damage produced by the stylus on the tested surface.

How does a scratch resistance test on a coating work?
The coated sample is secured on the device and moved beneath a stylus moving along the surface with the load specified by the method. During or after the test, the appearance of marks, scratches or film penetration is assessed.

What is the difference between SAAST520/1 and SAAST520/2?
SAAST520/1 performs the test with a fixed load, while SAAST520/2 applies a variable load. The first is suitable for checking coating behaviour under a defined condition; the second makes it possible to observe film response during progressively increasing stress.

When should the fixed-load SAAST520/1 model be selected?
It is suitable when the inspection requires a predetermined load to be applied, followed by verification of coating behaviour, for example in comparative tests or pass/fail checks.

When should the variable-load SAAST520/2 model be selected?
It is suitable when the load at which the coating first shows signs of damage needs to be identified, or when different coatings need to be compared based on their resistance to progressively increasing loads.

Does the test measure coating adhesion?
The test is intended to assess film resistance to scratching or scuffing. It does not replace methods specifically designed to measure coating adhesion to the substrate.

Which coatings can be tested with a scratch test?
The test can be performed on dried paints, enamels, finishes and coatings applied to samples that are compatible with the instrument configuration and selected method.

What is the advantage of the repositionable worktable?
On both models, the repositionable worktable allows testing to be carried out in different areas of the same panel, making it easier to organise multiple tests on the same sample.

Which standard applies to fixed-load testing?
SAAST520/1 is used for fixed-load tests in accordance with ISO 1518-1.

Which standard applies to variable-load testing?
SAAST520/2 is used for variable-load tests in accordance with ISO 1518-2.

Can the instrument also be used in accordance with EN 13523-12?
Yes. Both models comply with EN 13523-12, which should be used when appropriate for the coating, substrate, and specified inspection procedure.
