Digital rotary viscometers – SAVISC162

The digital rotary viscometers are instruments used to measure the viscosity of liquids, fluids and semi-liquid materials through the controlled rotation of a rotor immersed in the sample. They are suitable when a more structured measurement is required than the rapid checks carried out with flow cups, particularly in laboratories, production, quality control and research.

The rotary viscometer measures the resistance that the fluid opposes to rotor rotation. The greater the resistance of the material to rotor movement, the higher the measured viscosity. This principle makes it possible to check fluids with different characteristics, from low-viscosity liquids to denser materials with greater resistance to flow.

The SAVISC162 digital viscometers feature constant rotation-speed control and display the main test parameters, including speed, rotor type, measurement result, temperature, dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity. The temperature probe makes it possible to monitor an important parameter, as viscosity can vary significantly with changes in sample temperature.

Dynamic viscosity expresses the internal resistance of a fluid to flow, whereas kinematic viscosity relates dynamic viscosity to the density of the fluid. The availability of both readings makes the instrument useful in different application areas, from material formulation to process control.

Two models are available. SAVISC162-1 is suitable for checks on low- or medium-viscosity fluids, while SAVISC162-2 extends the measuring range to more viscous materials. For low-viscosity applications, the optional LV0 rotor is available when the sample requires a more sensitive measuring range than standard rotors.

The standard supply includes LV1, LV2, LV3 and LV4 rotors, selected according to the viscosity range of the fluid to be checked. Rotor selection is important because each rotor operates correctly within a defined measuring range: a rotor that is not suitable for the sample may produce a reading that is not meaningful or consistent with the required test.

SAVISC162 digital rotary viscometers are suitable for chemical, industrial, food, medical and cosmetic applications, as well as laboratory and scientific-research activities. They can be used on oils, resins, paints, emulsions, solutions, technical fluids and materials compatible with the rotational measurement principle.

When wider measuring ranges, dedicated accessories, more flexible speeds or configurations for small sample volumes are required, SAVISC155 multifunction digital rotary viscometers can be considered. Where sample temperature must be kept under control during the test, rotary viscometers with temperature control SAVISC156TC and SAVISC157TC are available.

SAVISC162 viscometers are used for testing in accordance with ISO 2555, ASTM D1084-B and ASTM D2196, technical references for viscosity measurement using rotary viscometers. The applicable method must be selected according to the material, sector and required control procedure.

A calibration report is available on request, useful when the instrument must be included in a quality-control system with documented metrological checks.

SAVISC162 digital rotary viscometers therefore provide a practical and complete solution for measuring fluid viscosity under controlled conditions, with digital reading of the main parameters and the possibility of adapting the measuring range to the type of sample.

FAQ – Digital rotary viscometers

What is a rotary viscometer used for?
It is used to measure the viscosity of a fluid through the controlled rotation of a rotor immersed in the sample. The resistance of the fluid to rotation is used to determine the viscosity value.

How does a digital rotary viscometer work?
The rotor is immersed in the sample and rotated at a controlled speed. The instrument measures the resistance opposed by the fluid to rotor movement and displays the viscosity value together with the main test parameters.

What is the difference between dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity?
Dynamic viscosity indicates the internal resistance of a fluid to flow. Kinematic viscosity instead relates dynamic viscosity to the density of the fluid.

When should SAVISC162-1 be selected?
SAVISC162-1 is suitable for checking low- or medium-viscosity fluids within the measuring range provided by the model.

When should SAVISC162-2 be selected?
SAVISC162-2 is suitable when more viscous materials must be measured or when a wider measuring range is required than with SAVISC162-1.

What is the optional LV0 rotor used for?
The LV0 rotor is useful for low-viscosity applications when the sample requires a more sensitive measuring range than standard rotors.

Which rotors are included in the standard supply?
The standard supply includes LV1, LV2, LV3 and LV4 rotors, to be selected according to the viscosity of the sample to be checked.

Why is temperature important in viscosity measurement?
Viscosity can change significantly with temperature. For this reason, SAVISC162 viscometers include a temperature probe for monitoring sample conditions during the test.

What is the difference between SAVISC162 and SAVISC155?
SAVISC162 is a complete and straightforward digital rotary-viscometer solution. SAVISC155 is a more configurable multifunction range, with wider measuring ranges, dedicated accessories and options for small sample volumes.

When should a viscometer with temperature control be selected?
When sample temperature must be maintained under control during the test, models such as SAVISC156TC or SAVISC157TC should be considered, as they are designed for measurements with dedicated temperature control.

Which materials can SAVISC162 rotary viscometers be used on?
They can be used on oils, resins, paints, emulsions, solutions, technical fluids and materials compatible with the rotational measurement principle.

Is a calibration report available?
