Ceramic gauge block sets – SAC

Ceramic gauge block sets, also known as ceramic gauge blocks or ceramic Johnson gauge blocks, are precision length standards used in metrology and quality control applications for dimensional inspection, verification of the accuracy of measuring instruments and calibration operations. Available configurations include 32, 47, 87, 103 and 122 pieces, in grade K, 0 and 1.

The composition of the sets is designed to allow the creation of multiple nominal dimensions using a defined number of elements. This makes it possible to cover a wide measuring range and obtain dimensional reference standards suitable for different operational requirements, from routine inspection to more advanced metrology applications.

One of the key characteristics of gauge blocks is the possibility of being wrung together to obtain different dimensional combinations according to the required measurement. This property makes them particularly useful in inspection and calibration activities where reliable precision length standards must be quickly created.

Compared to steel sets, ceramic gauge blocks are particularly appreciated when a material with high wear resistance, excellent long-term stability and reduced sensitivity to corrosion is required. For this reason, they represent an interesting solution both for laboratory applications and for frequent use in quality control departments.

Dimensional and metrological characteristics comply with ISO 3650. The technical data sheet includes flatness tolerances and metrological data at 20 °C for the different application grades.

In particular:

  • Grade 1 for inspection and calibration of measuring instruments
  • Grade 0 for use in climate-controlled environments and metrology laboratories
  • Grade K for high-accuracy metrology applications and inspection of lower-grade gauge blocks

The sets can also be used together with stainless steel gauge block packers, allowing multiple elements to be assembled into stable configurations for dimensional inspection applications. This setup makes it possible to perform internal and external measurements and makes the gauge blocks particularly suitable for inspection and calibration of measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial bore gauges and other measuring devices.

Upon request, sets can be supplied with a calibration report or ACCREDIA certificate.

Applications

  • Dimensional inspection using precision length standards
  • Inspection and calibration of calipers, micrometers and dial bore gauges
  • Use in metrology laboratories and quality control departments
  • Creation of nominal dimensions by wringing multiple gauge blocks together
  • Metrological reference standards for accurate production inspections

FAQ – Ceramic gauge block sets

What are ceramic gauge block sets?
They are sets of precision length standards used as reference standards for dimensional inspection and calibration of measuring instruments.

Why choose ceramic gauge blocks?
Ceramic offers excellent wear resistance and reduced sensitivity to corrosion, characteristics particularly useful in continuous metrology applications.

Can ceramic gauge blocks be combined together?
Yes, they can be wrung together to obtain different reference lengths and dimensional combinations according to the required measurement.

Which set configurations are available?
Available configurations include 32, 47, 87, 103 and 122 pieces in grades K, 0 and 1.

What are grades K, 0 and 1 used for?
They identify the metrological grade and intended application: grade 1 is suitable for instrument inspection, grade 0 for controlled environments and grade K for high-accuracy metrology applications.

Can they be used with stainless steel gauge block packers?
Yes, combining them with stainless steel gauge block packers allows stable reference lengths to be created for internal and external measurements and calibration activities.

Which measuring instruments are most commonly inspected with them?
They are mainly used for inspection and calibration of calipers, micrometers, dial bore gauges and other measuring instruments.

Are they available with certification?
Yes, they can be supplied with a calibration report or ACCREDIA certificate.

When should ceramic gauge blocks be preferred over steel gauge blocks?
Ceramic gauge blocks are particularly suitable when greater wear resistance, long-term stability and lower sensitivity to corrosion are required, especially for frequent or continuous use.

Do ceramic gauge blocks expand more than steel gauge blocks?
No, the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramic gauge blocks is similar to that of steel gauge blocks, so the main difference is generally related to stability, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

When should steel or ceramic gauge blocks be selected?

The choice between steel gauge blocks and ceramic gauge blocks depends on the type of application, the working environment and the frequency of use.

Steel gauge blocks represent the most traditional and widely used solution for routine dimensional inspection operations. Ceramic gauge blocks, on the other hand, are particularly suitable when improved wear resistance and better long-term stability are required, especially in frequent-use applications or environments where corrosion resistance is important.

From a metrological standpoint, both solutions are available with characteristics compliant with ISO 3650 and in different application grades.

When to choose steel gauge blocks

  • When a traditional and widely used solution is preferred
  • When individual elements must be easily integrated or replaced within an existing set
  • When working mainly with conventional reference standards in workshops or laboratories

When to choose ceramic gauge blocks

  • When improved wear resistance is required
  • When reduced sensitivity to corrosion is important
  • When long-term stability is needed in frequent-use applications

In both cases, gauge blocks can be used as reference standards for inspection and calibration of measuring instruments and, when combined with stainless steel gauge block packers, they can also be used to create reference lengths for internal and external measurements.
