Reflectance meter – SA0835/0RF

The reflectance meter is a portable instrument used to evaluate the reflectance of a surface and the hiding power of coatings, films, paints, inks, plastics and materials compatible with the measurement method.

When light strikes a surface, part of it is reflected, part is absorbed and, in some cases, part is transmitted or scattered depending on the material, color and applied thickness. The reflectance meter makes it possible to quantify the response of the surface to light, making inspection more objective than visual assessment alone.

The instrument is particularly useful when it is necessary to verify how effectively a coating, paint, film or applied material covers the underlying substrate. It is therefore used for hiding power checks, relative transparency assessment and comparison between samples applied over different backgrounds.

The 45°/0° geometry provides a configuration suitable for reflectance evaluation. The value is displayed directly on the screen, making the instrument practical for checks in laboratories, production departments and incoming-material inspection.

The reflectance meter is suitable for sectors such as paints, coatings, pigments, inks, plastics, printing, dyeing, leather goods and projection materials. It is useful when quality control must verify consistency between samples, compare different materials or assess the covering performance of an application.

The internal memory allows measurements to be stored during inspection sessions. This is useful when several values need to be collected on the same sample, different samples compared or a record of completed checks maintained.

The data output enables connection to optional software for collecting measurements, improving traceability and reducing transcription errors in quality-control processes. Cable and software are available as optional accessories.

The reflectance meter should not be confused with a whiteness meter, which checks the white value of a material, or with a glossmeter, which measures surface gloss. When complete color analysis or color-difference comparison is required, colorimeters and spectrophotometers are more suitable.

Applications

  • Reflectance measurement on surfaces compatible with the control method
  • Evaluation of the hiding power of paints, coatings, films and inks
  • Quality control on pigments, plastics, printing and dyeing materials
  • Verification of covering performance between different formulations or batches
  • Inspection of materials for leather goods, coatings and treated surfaces
  • Measurement collection through data output and optional software
  • Checks in laboratories, production departments and incoming-material inspection

FAQ – Reflectance meter

What is a reflectance meter used for?
It is used to measure the reflectance of a surface and assess the hiding power of materials such as paints, coatings, films, inks and plastics.

What does reflectance indicate?
Reflectance indicates how much light is reflected by a surface compared with the incident light. The value can be used to compare samples and assess the optical behaviour of a material.

What does hiding power mean?
Hiding power indicates the ability of a coating, paint, film or ink to cover the underlying substrate, reducing the influence of the background on the visual result.

Which materials can it be used on?
It can be used on paints, coatings, films, inks, pigments, plastics, printing materials, dyeing materials, leather goods and other samples compatible with the measurement method.

Does a reflectance meter measure color?
No. It does not measure complete color as a colorimeter or spectrophotometer does. It is used to assess reflectance and the hiding power of the material.

What is the difference between a reflectance meter and a glossmeter?
A reflectance meter evaluates reflected light and hiding power. A glossmeter instead measures surface gloss.

What is the difference between a reflectance meter and a whiteness meter?
A whiteness meter checks the white value of a material. A reflectance meter is instead intended for evaluating reflectance and hiding power.

Does the instrument have a data output?
Yes. It has a data output and can be connected to a PC using optional cable and software.
