Whiteness meter – SA0835/0WM

The whiteness meter is a portable instrument used to determine the whiteness value of surfaces, light-coloured materials and samples compatible with the measurement method. It is suitable when the whiteness level of a material must be checked objectively, avoiding evaluations based solely on visual observation.

Whiteness control is important in many production sectors because the level of white can affect the perceived quality of the material and consistency between different batches. Paper, plastics, ceramics, paints, chemical products, construction materials, textiles, fibres and powders may require whiteness verification during quality control, incoming inspection or throughout the production process.

The instrument measures whiteness using blue light at 457 nm. This configuration makes it possible to quantify sample whiteness and compare materials of the same type more repeatably than through visual assessment alone.

The 45°/0° measurement geometry uses a configuration suitable for whiteness control. The measured value is displayed directly on the screen, making the reading immediate and easy to interpret.

The whiteness meter is suitable for checks on paper, cardboard, plastics, ceramics, paints, cement-based materials, chemical products, textiles, fibres and powders. In light-coloured materials, even small variations in whiteness may indicate differences in composition, treatment, finish, process or production batch.

To obtain consistent results, it is important to prepare the sample repeatably. For paper, textiles and fibres, it may be necessary to stack several layers until an opaque and stable measuring surface is obtained. With powders or fine granular materials, the sample must be prepared uniformly on a flat surface, maintaining consistent quantity, compactness and preparation conditions between one check and another.

The internal memory allows measured values to be stored during measurement sessions. This is useful when several checks must be carried out on the same material, different samples compared or a series of data collected before review.

The data output enables connection to optional software for collecting measurements, improving traceability and reducing transcription errors in quality-control processes. Cable and software are available as optional accessories.

The whiteness meter does not replace colorimeters or spectrophotometers when complete color analysis or color-difference evaluation is required. It is instead suitable when the parameter to be checked is specifically the whiteness level of the material. A color matching cabinet can be used for visual color assessment under controlled illuminants, while colorimeters and spectrophotometers are more suitable for broader color measurements.

Applications

  • Whiteness measurement on paper and cardboard
  • White-value control on plastics and light-coloured materials
  • Whiteness verification on compatible ceramics, paints and coatings
  • Quality control on chemical products, cement-based materials and construction materials
  • White measurement on textiles, fibres and materials for textile printing
  • Whiteness control on uniformly prepared powders and fine granular materials
  • Comparison between samples of the same material or different batches
  • Whiteness-level verification in laboratories, production and incoming-material inspection

FAQ – Whiteness meter

What is a whiteness meter used for?
It is used to measure the white value of a material and objectively assess the whiteness level of surfaces, items or samples prepared for measurement.

What is the difference between whiteness and color?
Whiteness concerns the degree of white of a material. Color requires a broader colorimetric evaluation, which can be carried out with colorimeters or spectrophotometers.

Which materials can be measured?
It can be used on paper, cardboard, plastics, ceramics, paints, chemical products, construction materials, textiles, fibres and powders, provided that the sample is compatible with the measurement method and prepared correctly.

Can it be used on powders?
Yes. It can also be used on powders or fine granular materials, but the sample must be prepared uniformly under repeatable conditions from one measurement to another.

Why is sample preparation important?
Differences in thickness, compactness, density, particle size or material arrangement can affect the result. To compare similar samples, preparation should remain as consistent as possible.

Does the whiteness meter also measure gloss?
No. It measures whiteness. Glossmeters are used for gloss measurement, while colorimeters and spectrophotometers are used for complete color analysis.

Is it suitable for checks on paper and textiles?
Yes. It is suitable for whiteness control on paper, textiles and fibres. In these cases, several layers may need to be stacked to obtain an opaque and stable measuring surface.

Does the instrument store measurements?
Yes. It has internal memory for storing measured values during control sessions.

Is the software included?
No. Cable and software are optional accessories. The data output enables connection to a PC when measurements need to be collected and managed in a documented way.
