The clamp section closes around a single conductor and allows quick checks on electrical systems, panels, motors, power lines, machinery and components where current draw needs to be verified.

In addition to AC and DC current measurement, these digital clamp meters can measure AC/DC voltage, resistance, frequency, continuity and diodes. They therefore bring together in a single instrument the functions required for electrical checks in maintenance, technical service, testing and system inspections.

Two models are available.

The SAPA5940 extends checking capabilities with capacitance, temperature and duty cycle measurement. It is suitable when these additional measurements are required alongside the main electrical checks.

The SAPA5950, on the other hand, includes the True RMS function and maximum and minimum value display. It is therefore more suitable when AC current and voltage need to be analysed even in the presence of signals that are not perfectly sinusoidal.

The True RMS function calculates the true effective value of AC current or voltage. In circuits with a regular sinusoidal waveform, the difference compared with a conventional measurement may be limited; however, when the signal is distorted or includes non-sinusoidal variations, True RMS provides a reading that is more representative of the actual value. For this reason, a True RMS clamp meter is suitable for checks on electrical systems and loads where AC current does not follow a regular waveform.

The Max/Min function helps recall the highest and lowest values detected during the check, making it easier to assess variations in current draw or non-constant conditions. Hold, relative zero, auto-ranging and automatic power-off complete the instrument’s use in everyday inspection activities.

The choice between the two clamp meters therefore depends on the type of measurements required. When temperature, capacitance and duty cycle are also needed, the SAPA5940 may be selected. When the check mainly concerns AC current and voltage with possible waveform distortion, the SAPA5950 with True RMS function is the more suitable solution.

Calibration report available on request, to accompany the clamp meters with metrological documentation useful for internal checks and for monitoring their status over time.

Applications

AC/DC current measurement on electrical panels and systems

Monitoring of current draw on motors, machinery and power lines

Checks on DC and AC circuits

Electrical checks during preventive maintenance and technical service

Detection of current-draw anomalies on components and systems

Measurement of voltage, resistance, frequency, continuity and diodes

Checks on power supplies, equipment and electrical components

Checks on circuits with AC signals that are not perfectly sinusoidal

FAQ – AC/DC clamp meters

What is a clamp meter used for?
A clamp meter is used to measure the current flowing through a conductor without disconnecting or interrupting the circuit being checked.

Does a clamp meter measure AC and DC current?
Yes, both models can measure AC and DC current, making them useful for checks on AC systems, DC power supplies, motors, panels and electrical components.

Why must the clamp close around only one conductor?
The measurement is taken by detecting the field generated by the current flowing through the conductor. To obtain a correct reading, the clamp must surround a single conductor rather than the entire cable containing multiple wires.

What does True RMS mean?
True RMS indicates a function that calculates the true effective value of AC current or voltage. It is useful when the signal does not have a regular sinusoidal waveform, as it provides a reading that is more representative of the actual value.

When is it useful to choose a True RMS clamp meter?
It is suitable when AC current or voltage needs to be checked on circuits where the waveform may be distorted or not perfectly sinusoidal.

Which model should be selected to measure temperature and capacitance as well?
The choice should be directed towards the model that, in addition to the main electrical measurements, also includes temperature, capacitance and duty cycle measurement.

Does a clamp meter measure only current?
No. In addition to AC/DC current, the instruments can measure voltage, resistance, frequency, continuity and diodes.

What is the Max/Min function used for?
It makes it possible to recall the maximum and minimum values detected during the check, helping assess changes in current or voltage over time.

Is a calibration report available?
Yes, a calibration report is available on request.

AC/DC clamp meters make it possible to measure the current flowing through a conductor without interrupting the circuit.
