It is used for production checks, quality-control laboratories and packaging verification in the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.

Torque measurement makes it possible to assess closure performance objectively. Regular checks allow samples, batches, capper settings and different container-and-cap combinations to be compared, providing useful data to maintain a more consistent packaging process.

The container is placed in the centre of the instrument and secured by four adjustable cylinders. This arrangement allows the clamping system to be adapted to samples with different diameters and keeps them stable while the cap is rotated. A specific optional adaptor is available for particularly small containers or closures.

Once the sample has been secured, the operator manually turns the cap in the direction required for the test. The integrated torque cell detects the applied torque and displays the result, allowing both opening torque and closing torque to be measured.

The instrument measures torque in clockwise and anticlockwise directions. It can therefore be used to check closures with different rotation directions and to distinguish clearly between tightening and loosening tests.

To obtain comparable measurements, the container must be positioned securely and kept aligned with the rotation axis. The adjustable cylinders should prevent sample movement without deforming the container or affecting its behaviour during the test.

Different measuring ranges are available and should be selected according to the maximum expected torque and the values normally measured on the cap. A suitable range allows accurate checks to be carried out without unnecessarily oversizing the instrument’s working range.

The bench torque tester provides several operating modes. Instantaneous reading allows torque to be monitored while it is applied, while peak mode retains the maximum value reached during opening or closing.

The auto-peak function records successive maximum values according to the selected interval, making it useful when several samples must be checked using the same procedure. First-peak mode identifies the first significant event in the test by recording the maximum value reached before torque decreases by the set percentage.

Double-peak mode detects two distinct events within the same measurement cycle. It is useful when opening or closing involves two significant torque variations and both values need to be retained for subsequent assessment.

The display can show the result numerically or graphically. The operator can therefore view the measured value, rotation direction and torque trend during the test.

Minimum and maximum limits allow each measurement to be compared with a previously defined range. This function supports pass/fail checks and speeds up the verification of caps and closures that must comply with torque values established by the user.

The internal memory stores multiple measurements and organises results into groups. This makes it possible to separate tests relating to different products, batches, packaging lines or inspection sessions. Recorded values can also be reviewed and used to calculate minimum, maximum and average values.

Software and USB cable are included. Values stored in the torque tester memory can be transferred to a PC, archived and exported for control-documentation management.

During the test, the instrument can also be connected to a computer to acquire torque variation in real time and generate the torque/time curve. The graph shows how torque changes during opening or closing and allows the entire measurement trend to be analysed, not only the maximum value.

The software allows data and graph images to be exported, average and peak values to be calculated over the entire recording or a selected section, and acquisition start and stop conditions to be set. The torque/time curve is generated only during real-time recording.

The cap torque tester can be used to compare different materials, geometries and closure systems, verify the consistency of capper settings and check the uniformity of values measured on samples from the same batch.

The instrument provides the data needed for evaluation, while reference values and acceptance criteria are defined by the user according to the container, cap, application and packaging-process specifications.

A calibration report is available on request.

Applications

Checking cap opening torque

Verifying closing and tightening torque

Clockwise and anticlockwise measurements

Tests on bottles, jars, flacons and containers

Checking screw caps and threaded closures

Verifying capper-machine settings

Comparing different cap-and-container combinations

Sample checks during packaging

Verifying uniformity between samples from the same batch

Comparing different cap and closure supplies

Pass/fail checks using adjustable limits

First-peak and double-peak detection

Recording maximum torque values

Real-time acquisition of the torque/time curve

Transfer of stored measurements to a PC

Checks in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors

Verification in the chemical and packaging sectors

Laboratory, production and quality-control activities

FAQ – Digital cap torque tester

What is a digital cap torque tester used for?
It is used to measure the torque required to open or close caps fitted to bottles, jars, flacons and other containers.

What is the difference between opening torque and closing torque?
Opening torque is the torque required to start or complete cap removal. Closing torque is the torque applied while tightening the closure onto the container.

Does the instrument measure in both directions?
Yes. The torque tester measures both clockwise and anticlockwise torque, allowing tightening and loosening tests to be carried out.

How is the container secured?
The sample is clamped by four adjustable cylinders arranged around the container to keep it stable while the cap is rotated.

Can containers with different diameters be tested?
Yes.
