Different types of materials will require different probes. This choice is fundamental to do accurate measurements . Below are indicated principal parameters to consider for select the appropriate probe.

Generally the best probe is the one that can send sufficient ultrasonic energy into the material so that the instrument will receive the return echo. Factors that influence propagation of ultrasonic are many:

Output signal’s power: Stronger is the output signal and stronger will be return echo . This parameter depends primarily on the size of probe’s component emitting ultrasonic. A large area of emission will send a greater quantity of energy into material than an area of reduced emission.

Absorption and dispersion: When ultrasonic passes through a material is partially absorbed. If the sample has a granular structure ultrasonic wave will be subjected to a dispersion effect. Both phenomena cause an ultrasonic energy reduction , therefore the capability of receiving return echo will be reduced . High frequency ultrasonic are more subjected to dispersion effect from those of lesser intensity . We must point out that these last are less subject to directionality than higher so they aren’t the best to be used. The revolution represented by rebound hardness testers is primarily related to their portability combined to very high precision and to the type of non-destructive test which are able to make. This method is based on the Leeb principle introduced by Dietmar Leeb in 1975. Conceptually it’s defined as the ratio between impact speed and impact body rebound velocity , then multiplied by 1000 . Depending on metal type the Leeb method indicates hardness value that can be converted to other scales ( for example HB , HV , HRC etc. ) . Using the same principle is also possible to measure tensile strength in relation to steel . The operating principle is based on the application of a certain force to an impact body of a certain weight , that will go to touch the measuring surface. The instrument respectively measure impact and rebound velocity when spherical striker is located to 1mm from the measuring surface . The calculation formula is the following:

HL=1000×(VB/ VA)

HL → Hardness value HLD

VB → Rebound speed of impact body

VA → Penetrator impact velocity

With this method we can measure many materials, like:

Steel and fusions

Cold work tool steel

Stainless steel alloys

Gray cast iron

Nodular cast iron

Mergers and aluminum alloys

Brass alloys / zinc brass alloys

Bronze alloys

Copper alloys

Application areas

Application areas of rebound hardness testers are many , some examples:

Control and approval of incoming goods (input)

Quality control on production line (output)

Stress measurement of material (maintenance)

Testing tensile strength

Molds cavity

Bearings and other parts

Troubleshooting pressure pots

Steam generators and other equipment

Possibility of operation on large parts

Assembled parts measurement

Small areas measurement

Accessories

Probes

Rebound hardness testers supports various types of probes according to inspection conditions and the tested material . After the spraying phase, the liquid must be allowed to drain so that it penetrates both by gravity and by capillarity. The penetration time is set by the ASME tables but can also be determined experimentally: for example, for the liquid with a contrasting colour (red) a time of 5/10 minutes is recommended. In any case, the duration of this phase must be verified based on the discontinuities to be detected, possibly establishing acceptability criteria. It is important not to allow the penetrant to dry out: if necessary, reapply it. The temperature at which the tests must be carried out is also important: to obtain a good result, it is recommended to remain in the range between 10°C and 40°C for both the piece and the environment in which the test is carried out. Outside these limits the penetrant may behave incorrectly, therefore its use at different temperatures must be verified with tests. The invention of the vernier can be attributed to the Portuguese Pedro Nunes, who published in 1542 a description of an ingenious system to measure small arcs with sufficient accuracy. At the German Ciavius (1640) is attributable the evolution of the vernier and at the French Pierre Vernier (1631, from which is derived the name “Vernier”) is attributable the current form of the Vernier caliper. The caliper is used to make measurements with an accuracy of a fraction of a thousandth; it consists in a rod, which on one side is graph, and on the other side is divided in inches and sixteenths of an inch. Furthermore, it presents two jaws for external measurements, two jaws for internal measurements and a tab L for depth measurements.

Caliper is divided in three parts: one fixed, one movable (Vernier) and the little rod.

In the fixed part, there is a jaw upwards and a jaw downwards and the corresponding ones are located in the moving part. The jaws are used to measure the length or the diameter, the small rod is used to measure the depth. The jaws are rounded at the ends, because they are used to measure very small places so that they touch the inside of the circles perfectly.

In calibres more expensive, the small rod is round in order to measure perfectly even the depths of the holes (round rod caliper).

On the fixed part, at the bottom there is a scale divided in mm, and at the top there is a scale divided in inches (1 inch=25,4mm). On the movable part (or Vernier), there are two scales, one at the bottom and one at the top. The bottom takes the name of Vernier. The caliper can reach approximations of one-tenth, one-twentieth and one-fiftieth of a millimetre, using the device of Vernier. The vernier is a movable rod, which slides on the fixed rod graduated in millimetres; the length of the vernier scale is divided into “n” equal parts, which correspond to the length of n-1 fixed rod’s parts. Each division of the vernier has a length equal to the ratio (n-1)/n. For example, in the decimal caliper each division of the vernier is equal to (10-1) / 10 = 9/10 of a millimetre.

The most used Vernier calipers are those with twentieth system, whose vernier has a length of nineteen mm with twenty divisions, or fiftieth system, whose vernier measures forty-nine mm and is divided into fifty parties.

To avoid reading errors, due to the difficulty of detecting the coincidence of the vernier’s notch with the fixed scale’s notch, there’s a dial caliper whose movable jaws indicates the whole part of the reading, with scanning in multiples of 10 mm, and the pointer indicates the fraction remaining in millimetres and twentieth of a millimetre.

The most easy to use calipers are those with digital liquid crystal display. Digital calipers have a sliding rod usually made of steel and PVC body with electronic card. Generally, the reading of a precision digital caliper is hundredth, but there are pent-thousandth calipers where reading is displayed to 5 thousandths of a millimetre.

Calipers IP67 are often used in places with high quantities of powders and liquids, as they are the almost waterproof. PVC calipers are more fitting when the measurement takes place in the presence of magnetism or with excessive presence of liquids.

Some example of calipers:

<a title="Calibri
