Measuring instruments characterized by an IP code followed by two numbers have a very precise meaning that characterizes and distinguish them from others.
That is why it is important to know what these numbers mean.
What are the degrees of IP protection?
The CEI EN 60529/1997 (ex CEI 70-1) standard classifies the degree of protection of the measuring instruments and, more generally, of all electrical equipment casings.
The IP degree is indicated by two characteristic digits, representing the degree of protection against the weather to which the instrument may be exposed.
To determine this degree you need to know what the two digits match:
The first digit:
- 0: no protection;
- 1: protection against all solid bodies greater than 50 mm;
- 2: protection against all solid bodies greater than 12.5 mm;
- 3: protection against all solid bodies greater than 2.5 mm;
- 4: protection against all solid bodies greater than 1 mm;
- 5: dust protection;
- 6: Protection against any kind of dust.
The second:
- 0: no protection;
- 1: protection against condensation;
- 2: protection against light rain up to 15 ° from the vertical;
- 3: rain protection up to 60 ° from the vertical;
- 4: protection against any sprinkling coming from any direction;
- 5: protection against any water jet;
- 6: protection against any sprinkling, ex. swells;
- 7: protection against short-acting immersion;
- 8: protection against permanent immersion.
Demonstrations carried out by the Giordano Institute of Rimini
The certification body Istituto Giordano has numerous laboratories that cover all sectors related to the world of construction.
On their website we can see the dust and water resistance tests of two casings.
SSAMA TOOLS tools and their housings have different IP protection ratings.
Based on your usage or storage habits of calipers and other tools, we can recommend the most suitable type of protection.
Areas of use of calipers with IP protection
There are many areas in which we work with advanced tools that can guarantee a high level of protection for various agents:
Oil&Gas, Automotive, laboratory etc.
A widely used tool is the digital caliper with large screen in tempered stainless steel and IP67 protection.
