A pencil hardness tester is used to measure the hardness of a coating using a comparative method. The hardness is determined by the scratch left on the coated surface by a pencil with a known hardness (e.g., HB, 2B, 4H) which is placed at a 45° angle with variable weight. To perform the test, simply move the instrument over the sample.
The hardness is defined by the mark left by the pencil: a softer grade produces only a written trace, while a harder grade leaves a perceptible scratch on the coating.
