The cross hatch tester is primarily used to assess whether the various layers of paint are securely bonded to the surface. It also checks the adhesion between different coats when multiple layers are applied. The tester includes a handle, a metal head, a brush, a lens, and adhesive tape.
The metal heads come with either 6 or 11 blades, as per standard specifications, spaced at intervals of 1, 2, or 3 mm. Based on the spacing, the head measures coatings ranging from 0 to 60 μm, 60 to 120 μm, or 120 to 250 μm.
During testing, the selected head is slid orthogonally across the sample to create a grid pattern on the coating. By comparing the condition of the coating after testing with an internationally recognized reference table, users can easily determine the adhesion grade of the sample.
