High accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge – SAUT350-SW

The high accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge is designed for non-destructive inspection of flat metallic samples, especially in applications where very low thicknesses must be measured or where a higher measurement control level is required compared with standard thickness gauges.

The defining feature of this model is its 0.001 mm resolution, combined with an accuracy of ±0.005 mm up to 3 mm. It is designed for checking flat metallic components with very low thicknesses; in high accuracy mode, with reference to steel, it can measure thicknesses starting from 0.15 mm. It is therefore suitable for thin parts where even very small thickness variations can be relevant to component quality and conformity.

Like other ultrasonic thickness gauges, measurements can be performed from one side of the sample. Used with coupling gel, the probe transmits the ultrasonic signal through the material and the instrument calculates thickness by analysing the time required for the wave to travel through the sample and return. This makes it possible to measure the component without cutting, deforming or damaging it.

Unlike models used for general checks on sheet metal, pipelines or tanks, this high accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge meets a more specific requirement: high accuracy measurement of very thin metallic materials on flat surfaces. It is therefore not intended for every maintenance inspection or for components with complex geometries, but is the appropriate solution when thin metallic parts must be checked with 0.001 mm resolution.

This ultrasonic thickness gauge is used for quality control of thin sheets, foils, thin plates and metallic components where compliance with the specified thickness is a critical requirement. It can also be used in applications with demanding inspection requirements, including the aerospace sector, micromechanics, production of thin metallic components and laboratory activities dedicated to thickness verification on flat samples.

Single mode provides point-by-point thickness readings, while Scan mode allows the probe to be moved across the surface to identify variations within the inspected area. The Min. Capture function also detects the minimum value measured during inspection, making it easier to locally identify thinner areas of the sample.

One-point or two-point calibration functions allow the instrument to be adjusted according to the material and thickness range being inspected. Internal memory makes it possible to organise readings collected during checks, simplifying the management of several samples or different measurement points on the same component.

The data output allows connection to software for collecting and managing measurement results, improving traceability and reducing transcription errors in quality-control processes. On this model, cable and software are included as standard, allowing data to be managed and archived from the very first use.

It is important to distinguish this high accuracy gauge from thickness gauges designed for through-coating measurement. This model is intended for high accuracy inspection of flat metallic samples and does not exclude paint or insulating layers from the reading. Where the thickness of the base material beneath a coating must be determined, a specific ultrasonic thickness gauge for through-coating measurement should be used.

The ultrasonic thickness gauge for thin materials is therefore suitable when flat metallic samples must be checked with high resolution and accuracy, while readings are documented in an organised way. It is particularly useful in laboratories, quality departments and production processes where small thickness variations can affect component suitability or compliance with the required specifications. A calibration report is available upon request.

FAQ – High accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge

What is a high accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge used for?
It is used to measure the thickness of flat metallic samples with high resolution and accuracy, particularly where the component is very thin or where small thickness variations are important for quality control.

What is the main feature of this ultrasonic thickness gauge?
Its defining feature is 0.001 mm resolution, combined with an accuracy of ±0.005 mm up to 3 mm. This makes the instrument suitable for inspections on thin metallic samples and applications where thickness must be checked with high accuracy.

What is the minimum measurable thickness?
The instrument is intended for flat metallic samples with very low thicknesses. In high accuracy mode, with reference to steel, it can measure thicknesses from 0.15 mm.

Can it be used on any component geometry?
No. This model is intended for flat metallic samples. It is not the appropriate choice for components with complex geometries, surfaces unsuitable for probe contact or applications other than accurate inspection of reduced metallic thicknesses.

Can thickness be measured from one side of the sample only?
Yes. Ultrasonic measurement allows thickness to be determined from one accessible surface only, without cutting or damaging the component.

In which sectors can it be used?
It is suitable for laboratories and quality departments that inspect flat, thin metallic samples. It can be used in aerospace, micromechanics and the production of foils, thin sheets or metallic components where thickness is a critical parameter.

What is the difference compared with the accuracy ultrasonic thickness gauge?
A accuracy gauge is suitable for professional inspection of homogeneous materials in wider applications, for example on sheet metal, pipelines or tanks. This high accuracy model is specifically intended for flat metallic samples and very low thicknesses, where 0.001 mm resolution and high measurement accuracy are required.

Is Scan mode useful on thin samples?
Yes. Scan mode allows the probe to be moved over the sample surface to identify thickness variations. It is useful when checking thickness uniformity and detecting locally thinner areas.

What is the Min. Capture function used for?
The Min. Capture function identifies the minimum value measured during inspection, making it easier to locate the point with the lowest thickness within the examined area.

Does this model measure metal thickness while excluding paint or insulating coatings?
No. The high accuracy gauge is not designed to exclude paint or insulating layers from the reading. Where the thickness of the base material beneath a coating must be measured, a specific ultrasonic thickness gauge for through-coating measurement is required.

Are the cable and software included with the instrument?
Yes. Cable and software are included as standard and allow readings collected during inspections to be organised, improving the traceability of results.

Can a calibration report be requested?
Yes. A calibration report is available upon request and helps document instrument within company procedures for managing measuring equipment.
